Choosing your first strain: a member’s primer

The traditional shorthand: indica-leaning strains read as calmer and more physical, sativa-leaning as brighter and more head-forward, hybrids somewhere between, leaning where their parents lean. Modern breeding has blurred the categories — which is why every profile in the collection also lists effect tags, terpenes and cannabinoid numbers rather than resting on one word.

Use species as your first filter, then let the terpene profile and cannabinoid numbers refine the shortlist. Three data points beat one label every time.

Our grading — AA through AAA+ — scores what can be checked: density, trichome coverage, trim, aroma, cure. Higher grades cost more because they cost more to produce; a well-grown AA is still a good jar, and grade never overrides fit. The wrong AAA+ for your evening loses to the right AA.

Format is the second choice. Flower is the classic and the most controllable. Pre-rolls remove all friction. Edibles trade immediacy for duration — slow onset, long arc, and the strictest start-low rule on the shelf. Vapes and extracts are potent and precise, better as a second chapter than a first. When in doubt, start with flower or a pre-roll: easiest to dose, easiest to learn from.

Every good counter recommendation is those three questions in a trench coat. Answer them honestly — unwinding alone is a different purchase from hosting friends — and the four-hundred-jar problem collapses to a shortlist of three.
