Yes, pharmacists registered with the relevant Pharmacy Council can provide medicinal cannabis when provided with a legitimate prescription from a medical practitioner.

How can patients obtain Medicinal Cannabis in South Africa?

Patients can only obtain Medicinal Cannabis in South Africa through a medical practitioner who holds the relevant license to prescribe it, which is obtained from SAHPRA.

Can medical practitioners prescribe unregistered medicines, including Cannabis, in South Africa?

Yes, under the Medicines Act, medical practitioners can apply to SAHPRA for permission to access and prescribe unregistered medicines, including Cannabis, for their patients in specific exceptional circumstances.

What is a "Section 21 Application"?

A "Section 21 Application" is a process permitted by section 21 of the Medicines and Related Substances Act, 101 of 1965, through which unregistered medicines such as Medicinal Cannabis may be accessed in exceptional circumstances.

Can any medicine be sold without following this process of registration with SAHPRA?

The only way that unregistered medicine is allowed to be sold is when a doctor treating a patient makes an application (through a Section 21 Application) to SAHPRA to be allowed to treat the patient with such unregistered medicine. This medicine may be obtained through compounding by a pharmacist, or direct importation of a medicine for the patient. Medical Cannabis is therefore available from Seknd Nature within these allowances made, to ensure that you have access to the medicine that you need.
